Spring Forward to Better Sleep

Spring Forward to Better Sleep

Spring Forward to Restful Sleep 🕒

Daylight Savings started just days ago, signaling the beginning of spring and giving us that extra hour of daylight. While it's nice to have longer evenings, losing an hour of sleep can disrupt our internal clocks and affect our well-being more than we realize.

One of the most common side effects of Daylight Savings is sleep deprivation. On average, it will take most people one full day to get their internal clocks back on track. However, if you’ve already been having a hard time sleeping at night, it can take much longer.

The importance of a good night’s sleep cannot be overstated. Beyond feeling refreshed and productive, quality sleep plays a vital role in overall health. Lack of sleep or poor sleep quality can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, weakened immune defenses, chronic headaches, depression, anxiety, obesity, erectile dysfunction, and low libido.

So, what can be done to counteract the side effects of Daylight Savings and ensure restful sleep?

  1. Make your bedroom sleep-friendly: create a cool, dark, relaxing environment and unplug electronic gadgets such as tablets and TVs.

  2. Limit screen time in the hours before sleep.

  3. Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time, avoiding sleeping in too much on weekends.

  4. Try relaxation techniques such as listening to soothing music, progressive muscle relaxation, or bedtime meditation to ease into sleep.

  5. Refrain from mentally stimulating activities before bed and avoid consuming stimulants such as caffeine, cigarettes, or alcohol.

  6. Exercise regularly.

  7. Limit daytime napping to 30 minutes or less.

  8. Consider using natural remedies like magnesium, valerian, melatonin, or chamomile.

Here's to a rejuvenating night's sleep and embracing the joys of spring!
